November’s Students of the Month

The November students of the month were Olivia Jacobsen, Lilly Molyneux, Reyauna Guzman, and Richard Slawson. Olivia was chosen for the Kindergarten - 2^nd grade student of the month for always getting her worked turned in on time and using her extra time to help fellow classmates. Lilly was chosen as the 3^rd - 5^th grade student of the month for her being hard-working student with excellent study skills. She uses her class time wisely and gets right to work. The middle school student of the month was Reyauna Guzman. Reyauna is an outstanding student, classmate, and teammate. She goes out of her way to be helpful to her teachers and other students. Richard was chosen as the high school student of the month for showing amazing improvement with his academics and maturity level. He regularly checks with his teachers to make sure all of his work is completed and turned in, if it is not he takes the initiative to see that it gets completed. Thanks to the November’s Students of the Month.

Glenwood School Canned Food Drive

This year Glenwood School is sponsoring a canned food drive to help support our local community. Please bring non-perishable food items to the school between December 5th - 16th. This year we have set a school wide goal of 750 items. There will be a competition between preschool-5th grade and 6th-12th. The winning group will get a PRIZE!!!! This year the Leadership class will be helping to count and collect items each morning. Please help out this holiday season by bringing canned goods.

We would also like to thank everyone who participated in the Costume Contest this year. Every year we are amazed at the creativity of our staff and students. Good Job!

Glenwood in the News

Earlier this month students at the Glenwood schools helped our neighbors at the Conboy Lake National Wildlife refuge. The folks at Conboy were having an open house to show off their new and improved compound and other offerings. Our students made several trips to the refuge in preparation for the open house to take hikes, draw wildlife and write poems. Our artwork was shared at the open house to rave reviews! We even had students dress in period clothing and share soup and biscuits that were made by our students. Finally, some students are working on a student film about the Whitcomb - Cole cabin using resources from the original historian on the project. We would like to thank Shannon and the rest of the crew who helped bring us out to the Refuge.

Halloween Costume Contest

This year the Leadership class will be holding a costume contest as part of our Student of the Month Assembly on October 31. We will be having the traditional parade of costumes just prior to this assembly. The assembly will start at 9:30 a.m. in the gym. Students will be encouraged to change just prior to the parade. The Leadership class will be the judges for each grade band: Preschool—4th grade, 5th grade through 8th grade, High School and adults (both staff and parents are encouraged to dress up). There will be prizes awarded for Best Costume and Most Unique costume for each group. There will also be a overall winner for Best Costume 2011.

Middle School Community Job Shadows

The Middle School students had the opportunity to explore some of the local businesses as part of our advisory program. The students went to the Mt Adams Lodge at the Flying L Ranch and the Bureau of Indian Affairs offices here in Glenwood. At each local business we had presenters discuss the jobs that they do on a daily basis, their schooling and background, and what subjects in school that helped them most in their current positions. It was a good opportunity for our students to see what types of jobs are available in our community. We would like to thank Tim, George and Raylene for hosting us it was a really great morning!

Bus Safety Week

This week is School Bus Safety Week: 10/17/11 to 10/21/11. We had an assembly Tuesday morning where our bus drivers explained bus safety. For example, when getting on the bus and need to cross the road wait until the bus driver waves you across. Another reminder for the students was to stay seated properly and keep your feet out of the walkway. Another thing the drivers asked the students was to remind their parents about speeding in and out of the school parking lot. Drivers need to watch for young kids crossing. We also practiced the bus evacuation just in case there was an accident, and how to call for help using the GPS trackers.

Annuals for Sale

Annuals are now for sale in the office. These are from the 2010 - 2011 school year. This year we have 3 options for purchase. The first option is a black and white inside with a color cover. This is our least expensive option at $5 each. The next two options offer full color with different binding options. One option has a spiral binding and the other is stapled. Both all color options are $20 a piece. We are taking pre orders in the office through the second week of November. If you have any other questions please contact the school.

Student of the Month

The Student of the Month for this month is for K-2 is Emily Hasting. She is a young lady who has a positive attitude about her learning and is working very hard to improve academically. For 3-5 is Bella Couch. She is always a positive student and friend. She’s enthusiastic, curious learner who always participates fully and is quick to help others. For middle school is Whitney Feller. She shows enthusiasm for learning and participated well in class. Classroom teachers have been impressed with her positive attitude and willingness to participate in class and returns homework on time. The High School Student of the Month is Perry Wasgatt. He takes his own personal time to volunteer to help teachers here at school. This student is in charge of many things such as the leadership blog, President of the Senior Class, and volunteers with the GEARUP program.

We had a very successful final Enrichment day of the school year. Students K - 12 participated in a variety of activities throughout the day. The Knights of Veritas came and shared Medieval sword fighting techniques and the Code of Chivalry. Mrs Allaway helped lead the all school art project. Mr Jacobson came in and shared his knowledge and love of art and lead all students through landscape painting. Thanks for all the fun!

Kyle's will hang in the school's permanent collection.

Louden took a slightly different approach by using colored pencil. He also cut his parrot out and put it on a solid background rather than painting the background.

Madilyn has had a love-hate relationship with this painting. As you would guess, love won out.

In order to make these, each student found a photograph that they liked. After taping the paper down, each student drew an outline of the parrot they had chosen (free hand--no tracing!). Then they used tempera wash to add the color.

I'm really very proud of these artists, and not just for these paintings. They have been working so hard, developing strong skills, and enjoying the process, too!

The TLG track team had a good showing over the weekend. They had meets on Friday in Goldendale and Saturday in Moro. The girls took 2nd place at both meets. While the boys took 6th on Friday and 8th on Saturday. Good Job!

Student Led Conferences are being held Wednesday evening April 20th from 3 until 8 pm. Please contact Toni in the office for specific times for your child's conference with their advisor. These conferences are a time for students to show off what they have accomplished during the school year. They will be showing off portfolios that they have been working on, as well as, the digital story "My Hope".

During the Student Led Conference time the Seniors will be presenting their Senior Projects in the multipurpose room. If you are interested please feel free to come in during this time.

Glenwood has some talented performers and that was showcased on April 13th in the talent show. A wide variety of talents were showcased. Also during the performance the Music Club was selling Pampered Chef items to help fundraise for the group. It was a successful night all around.

We had several speakers come in to talk about their careers this past Thursday. We had Paul Satzinger who spoke about Americorps, Adventure guiding and green building. Next we had Joe Dean came and spoke about being a mobile large equipment mechanic. Finally, Tina Nakae who is a teacher at Trout Lake school.

Only YOU can prevent Forest Fires

Smokey they Bear visited the K-1 classroom today. There was a short video on the prevention of forest fires. Then there was a short discussion on what to do if you spot a fire out in the woods. Finally, our kids were able to ask questions. It was a fun presentation.

Make Change, Beat Cancer

The past few weeks students at Glenwood Schools have been raising money to help the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society by sponsoring a penny drive. We still have a few days to collect money, but so far it looks like we will far exceed our goal of raising $100. We made our goal of 1000 cans donated for the Winter Food Drive here at Glenwood Schools. We are so proud of our kids and our community for opening up those cupboards and donating food. We will be having a reward for the entire school with a movie and roller skating!! Good Job!

Christmas Dinner

We will be hosting a Christmas dinner on 12/17 starting at 11 am at the school. Please call Toni at the school to make reservations.

At the dinner we will have performances by the ASL club, the Spanish classes and the MS band. We will also be giving out the Student of the Month awards for December. Homecoming prince and princesses will be announced. Finally, the student and staff gift exchange will happen too.

We would like to thank everyone who helped out for the Thanksgiving Dinner. It was a huge success. We had about 125 people for the meal. The entertainment and slide show were also great! We look forward to doing it again in a few weeks for Christmas.

Renewable Energy Assembly November 15, 2010

On November 15th, 2010, Adam Crawford from the Wild Horse Renewable Energy Center in Ellensburg came to our school and presented about Renewable wind energy. He told us about the different jobs in this field, and the kind of pay each worker makes. He also gave a breif history of windmills around the world, and showed pictures of different ereas of windmills. All in all, it was a very informative presentation, and opened our minds to MANY new carreer possibilities.

Veteran's Day Assembly November 10th, 2010

On November 10th, 2010, our school had an assembly in honor of all the men and women who have served our country. We invited all the community members to come and join us.
The preschool class led the school in the Pledge of Allegiance, they did an amazing job.Dr. Couch then welcomed everyone for coming. Mrs. Allaway led the Middle School band in "Gallant March." Kaylene Tyndall then read a poem, called "American Hero." Jaylin Throop read a history of Veteran's Day, and, although it was short, it really encompassed the whole idea. Mr. Barnes led his American Sign Language class in signing "God Bless The USA" and they did a very good job. Mrs. Allaway then led the High School band in playing "The Star Spangled Banner." By this point, the assembly was over, and Mr. O again thanked everyone for coming and honoring the men and women who have served our country.

AVID Training

We had a group of teachers travel to Pasco for a training on AVID strategies sponsored by GEAR UP. Mr Barnes, Mr Evasick, Mrs Webb, Mr Oldenburg, and Jensi. This was a day long training about Cornell note taking, organization of binders, looking at inquiry and critical reading. The goal for this training was for our staff to learn new strategies to help students become more independent and more college and career ready.

The focus of the AVID training was on a variety of strategies to raise student achievement through academic rigor.

As a group they started the day off by developing a working definition of what rigor was.

What is Academic Rigor?
Higher level thinking and support to go beyond the basic ideas/topics. Demanding critical thinking and analysis. Thought provoking and challenging students at their level (different for different kids). Engage the student in the activity or demanding challenge. Academics that challenge a ceiling of learning. A set of thinking skills toolbox: contextualize, analysis, etc. Not just giving more homework, or adding work!

Cornell Notes
The notes are are process and not a product! Students must revisit their notes and review from time to time to best get a handle of the topics being studied. This is a basic 2 column note where students create columns. The right hand column is all the information that the student is taking notes on. The left column is where students have the opportunity to talk to the document, ask questions or create subtopics. It is a process where students can take notes, then take time daily to review the information in an organized manner. One big idea to remember is that the left hand column is thinking and the right hand column is where the note taking happens.

Overall this was a great training. All the teachers were very glad that they came to the training. With all trainings, the challenge is to now bring it back to Glenwood. Keep an eye out in these classes in the near future. There are some good things coming to a classroom near you!!

Glenwood Blood Drive

Q: How did the blood drive go?
A: It went really well. It exceeded our expectation. We were proud of our school and community and their citizenship.

Q: Did we meet our Quota?
A: Yes, our goal was 30, and we had 48 Blood donors.

Q: How many people showed up?
A: there was a 100 people that showed up 40 of them were volunteer helpers and the other 60 to donate blood.

Q: We’re any of them turned away for any reason dealing with Red Cross?
A: Yes, there was 3 deferrals due to travel to a foreign country.

Bus Ridership Week, October 4th-October 8th

October 4th through October 8th, Glenwood School encouraged all students to ride the bus to school in the morning. Every morning during the week, the bus drivers had to keep a log of all the students who rode the bus. Using those numbers, and a formula created by the state, the state calculates the amount of transportation funding for the next year.

Landscape Design

Two years ago the Glenwood School started a landscape design club in hopes of redesigning the front of our school to make it more visually appealing. The design process started with the help of Claude McKenzie. He showed us how to use the computer to design our project. Pam Keithly was later brought in to help Claude and the club to choose which native plants to use. Once the design process was finished, our school started planning in the Spring of 2010. Darren Jones helped tear out the shrubs that had previously been in the planting beds and then replace the soil with nutrient rich top soil. Darren then planted several new trees in the fall. The leadership class helped out by weeding and preparing the space for planting in the spring. For the May Enrichment Day we started planting. We used a wide range of native plants and grasses including: dogwood (red and yellow twigs), burning bush, mock orange, kinnikinnick, black eyed susans and rosa rugosa. Now the plants are starting to really fill and we think the landscaping process has been a huge success. We are now looking for our next landscape project in front of the gym.

On Thursday September 16th, Sergeant Chris Dowlearn from the United States Air Force stationed in Vancouver, WA visited Glenwood School to present his experience about being in the Air Force. He explained the benefits of joining the Air Force. Sergeant Dowlearn explained the places that he has traveled from his small town in Texas background thanks to his 11 years in the Air Force. He was also able to share with us about the educational benefits of joining the Air Force as an enlisted person, such as earning a 2- year degree through the Air Force Community College. But, the Air Force also offers other schooling, so you can earn higher degrees if you pursued that path. He also talked about the Post - 9/11 G.I. Bill that helps pay for schooling once you have left the Air Force. Sergeant Dowlearn talked about the leadership and other life skills he has learned in the Air Force.

For this month's Student of the Month assembly the leadership class did a short skit. Each student took a letter from the word "leader" and described aspects of what makes a good leader. This was a part of our town cleanup Scrub ‘n’ Grub project as part of the superintendent and school board goal of a student lead service learning project. The students were asked to share with their peers why being a leader and volunteer was important. This began with the leadership class researching service learning projects and then planned a town Scrub ‘n’ Grub for May 9th. For more details on volunteering contact the school or Mr. Oldenburg.

We have been working on several projects in the last few weeks. The first project was hanging WIAA state academic awards in the enterance by the gym. Next we worked on the trophy cases. We added some unique touches to showcase our awards. Finally, we put a case in the commons to showcase the artwork created by our students.

The TLG track team will be hosting a meet at Glenwood High School this Friday, May 1st. We are excited to host such a quality meet here at our school which include the top teams in our area. Schools that are signed up to attend include: Columbia HS of White Salmon, Goldendale HS, White Swan HS, Lyle HS, Klickitat HS, Bickleton HS, Yakama Nation Tribal School, and TLG. Come join the fun starting at 3 pm! There will be concessions run by the Pee Wee sports program that will include BBQ hamburgers.

6th Grade Yard Sale

The 6th grade class is having a yard sale on May 1st and May 2nd. We will be located in the Glenwood Schools bus garage. On Friday we will be selling items from 4 pm – 6 pm during the High School track meet. On Saturday we are opening at 8 am and will be there until noon. All proceeds will be going to the 6th grade class fund. Any items not sold will be donated to a community charity. Student Lead Conferences

Student lead conferences are on April 29th. We have been working hard putting together our Navigation 101 binders to share with our parents and our advisors. These folders include: our grades, WASL test scores, job shadow information, our personal awards, and service learning hours write ups. It is an exciting time to share what we have been working on all year with our parents.

We have been very busy in our leadership class lately. We have nearly finished the trophy case project that we have been working on most of the year. We have rearranged the trophies, painted the cases, and put very nice granite tiles in the bottom of the cases. And finally, we put mirrors on the sides of the cases that are a great finishing touch! These are now a great showcase piece for our school that will greet visitors when they enter our school. We also reconditioned another case to provide the art classes to show off their artwork that is now located in the commons.

T.A.T.U Training

On Friday, the Glenwood Leadership class attended a Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU) training in White Salmon, hosted by Colleen Wahto. We learned a lot about tobacco use, and were trained to help the younger generation understand the dangers of tobacco, smokeless or no.

After the training, which included pig lungs, BB, and factual demonstrations, lunch, T shirts, and Mr. Gross Mouth, we went to a park in Bingen to help us deal with being inside all day.

Jan Whitefoot

We had another great visit from the artist Jan Whitefoot based out of Harrah, WA. On Tuesday, March 10th Jan came to our school. She does an amazing job and runs an art clinic for our whole school. She focuses on Native American art. She brought some cedar baskets and beaded bags from her own private collection to share with us. Our students were able to sketch and do water colors. The major project for the high school kids was to create a snake out of a small piece of driftwood. These snakes were brightly painted and incorporated designs that Jan had shown the students. This is a very unique experience for Glenwood schools and fun was had by all!

Our break was very good! Turkey, presents, candy, and stockings GALORE! We are very excited to be back to school and back in the swing of things. This next week holds a Junior High Basketball game (Tuesday, Jan 6th at 5:00 with Bickleton), a Varsity game in Trout Lake with White Swan (Wednesday, Jan 7th, at 6:00), a Varsity game at Klickitat (Friday, Jan 9th, at 6:00) and a J.V. and Varsity game HERE with Bickleton. (Saturday, Jan 10th, at 5:00)
We are going to start our book, 7 ways to be a effective leader, very shortly, and we are very excited to be getting to our curriculum, finally!

This past week, the Leadership class has been very busy helping out with Christmas decorations and planning for the Christmas dinner! We've set up the tree and started making a Christmas Wreath to match our beloved turkey.
In other related news, the Canned Food Drive started last week, and ended yesterday December 18th. The 2nd and 3rd graders won with 25+ cans per 6 students! The 4th and 5th graders were not far behind, with approximately 14 cans per 11 students. The High School was almost last, with the PreSchoolers .1 cans per student behind. We have 17 kids, and they have 11 kids. In other words, our High Schoolers need some motivation and spirit if we are to survive even the simplest of tasks.
The Christmas Dinner was very successful. Our entire school ate together, parents and all, and a GIANT Thank You to the cooks, who so wonderfully prepared our Christmas Turkey. After we ate, each grade went back to their homeroom, with the High School in the Multi Purpose Room. Another big Thank You to our Secret Santas, who got us amazing gifts! Merry Christmas!!

I job shadowed an engineer named Mike at The Dalles Dam. It was really fun to go and look at what he does. We went and looked at the turbines and we went to the top of the dam. I have wanted to become an engineer for a couple years and now I really want to. Job shadow is a great way to find out what a job is like. Now I really want to become a engineer.

Job Shadow: Job shadow is awesome. I had fun doing it. Job shadow is a good way to find out if you want to do that job that you job shadowed. I job shadowed a motorcycle mechanic. I have wanted to be a motorcycle mechanic for a few years now. After doing my job shadow I want to pursue being a motorcycle mechanic even more. When I was at my job shadow the people were really nice. They answered the questions I had and were very helpful. So if you think that job shadow is a waste of time you’re wrong. Job shadow opens doors to jobs you want.
